I personally take some pride in my knowledge of anatomy and such. Being a biology major and an aspiring medical professional has had some benefits in that regard.
But how has that effected me artwise?
I guess it has made my art a little bit rigid. I build everything on the scaffold of the skeleton and neglect to pay attention of the "bendiness" of the actual form leaving the drawing somewhat like a posed model with no life in it. Also, sometimes I feel restricted, because I see other artists and art with much more freedom of movement than traditional anatomy would allow - I see that it looks good and works for the artist, but I personally am pained every time I make a knowing error in my drawings.
But everyone should learn anatomy. Knowing how parts come together and how they function is vital, especially when drawing from the mind. How can you create life without understanding the building blocks?
Anyways, I just purchased a very large and nice book on human anatomy for the artist. I has some of the major muscle groups mapped out and a ton of stock pictures with poses and such. great stuff, I'll probably be focusing on more human studies the rest of this month.
do expect some human ponies
